our lives are prayers

“Rejoice always, pray continually, give thanks in all circumstances; for this is God’s Will for you in Christ Jesus.”
1Thesalonians 5:16-18

In the most general sense, prayer is an ernest hope or wish. Our whole life – everything we say and do therefore – becomes a prayer because our desires ultimately guide our words and actions. If everything we do and say is a prayer, then it’s a question as to whom are we praying – to You, Lord, or ourselves (and subsequently evil)?

“Those who live according to the flesh have their minds set on what the flesh desires; but those who live in accordance with the Spirit have their minds set on what the Spirit Desires.” Romans 8:5

When our hopes and wishes align with Yours, Lord, our lives are prayers to You.
To pray continually to You, Lord, is to allow Your Holy Spirit to Lead. The more we show up, the easier it becomes to tell the difference between Your Way and our own. We feel discomfort and resistance at the moment before any utterance or action that is out of step – or we feel guilty afterwards. Your Living Word Instructs us in Your Ways, as do the teachings of Your disciples around us. In this way, we learn (over and over) to stay on Your Path for our lives. When we have asked You to Light the Way, Lord, we can be confident that, whether we are washing dishes, going to work, or sharing our resources and time with others, our prayers are to You. On Your Path our lives feel Right, no matter how difficult things become. Following You is not always easy for we will be rejected as You were and are. We will suffer the ravages of physically living in this space-time. But when our prayers are all to You throughout our waking day, then we spiritually live in Your Kingdom where we belong – United with You – Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. We have inexplicable Peace and Joy even as we endure the slings and arrows of this existence. Everything we do and say is a prayer.

Holy Spirit, make my life this day a prayer to the Lord. And pray for me continually.
